In this review, I will go over the main features of Promptchan and how they function in real life. I will talk about the AI chat and roleplay, the image and short video generation, and character creation and customization. I will also go over the user interface, generation parameters, community building tools, pricing, account types, and the all-important privacy, security, and content moderation measures.

How I Tested

To fairly review Promptchan, I operated the site hands-on, just as you would: generating a number of AI images in various styles and prompts, trying out pose and detail editors, and testing the video function which animates images. I also made AI characters and spoke with them in the AI chat/roleplay feature, to learn how they act and chat. Outside of content creation, I tested the site on both desktop and mobile to check usability, browsed the community library, and read the details of the credit and subscription model to understand how their payment and content use limits function.

In reality, using Promptchan is much more akin to using a role-play chatbot companion rather than having a chat with it. The platform is definitely optimized more towards character interactions, and you’ll notice that when you start a chat. The responses are typically in-line with the character that you’ve chosen, which makes the chat a little more immersive than a generic chatbot. Responses are usually fast and make sense. When it comes to flirting or just shooting the shit, the bot will continue to keep the conversation flowing naturally, and usually doesn’t struggle to remember context. The chatbot responds to follow-up questions well and will often try to progress the conversation rather than simply replying. As an example, it won’t simply end a message with a response, but will often finish it with some banter or a question of its own. One area where Promptchan does really shine is in RP chat scenarios. The bot is definitely set up to cater towards more sexual or flirtatious roleplays, and it really owns that, replying with very descriptive messages, and a pretty bold personality. The chat overall feels a bit less censored than many other chatbot platforms, which can make the chat feel a little more spontaneous and dramatic if you’re just flirting or roleplaying with the chatbot. That being said, the depth of the chat can be hit-or-miss. During longer conversations, messages can start to feel a little formulaic, with similar phrases or emotional cues being repeated in different messages. The bot will typically stay in character, but won’t necessarily be great at trying to control the narrative or come up with new ideas on its own. Overall, it’s fun for casual RP and flirting, with fast responses and an on-character tone. It feels lively for a short while, but during longer conversations, you might start to notice the lack of conversational variety.

Promptchan’s image generator is definitely optimized for character art, and it looks particularly good in some cases. Its best results are typically illustrated portraits and character profiles. Anime in particular is quite strong: faces are defined, facial expressions are visible, and lighting has the clean, shiny look of an “AI waifu” that the platform seems to be going for. Even with simple manipulations like a change of clothes or pose, it often gives a fairly pleasing result with minimal prompt iteration.

Its best results are single characters with a well-defined pose, outfit, and viewpoint. The results tend to be fairly clean, and the facial structure remains largely consistent between variations. The ability to manipulate pose and attributes in a settings menu is also helpful, allowing you to make changes without having to rewrite the prompt every time. This makes it a bit faster and more playful to experiment with.

I also noticed that its photorealistic setting sometimes results in a sort of overly smooth or slightly plastic look. I’ve also seen the fingers and toes suffer the familiar fate of diffusion model failure. Multi-character prompts, and prompts requiring more unusual activity, can sometimes result in more generic or anatomically incorrect images.

A drawback I noticed was that if you generate a few dozen images, you start to notice the same facial features, lighting and proportions repeating. Different characters start to look like slight variations on the same face. Nonetheless, for fast, stylized character generation and fantasy scenes, the tool can be a lot of fun. It doesn’t hold up as well for realistic scenes or less conventional imagery, but when it comes to “AI character art” it provides enough great results to keep exploring.

Promtchan Video Generator

In reality, Promptchan’s video generator is more of an animation tool than a video maker. Videos are very short, usually 2 or 3 seconds long and more akin to animated GIFs than actual videos.

The first thing you notice is that the movement it generates. It’s not big action movement, but rather micro movement: blinking, breathing, a slight movement of the body or the hair swaying in some simulated wind. This can look great and create the illusion that the character is “alive”. Especially if the character is photorealistic. The animation is smooth and you don’t have the impression anymore that the character is a static image. She’s alive.

But the restricted range of motion also makes you aware of the limitations of the generator. The character almost never changes pose during the video and most of the action happens inside a fixed frame. The camera almost never moves and the motion of the body tends to loop over itself. After some videos, you will start to see the same breathing patterns or the same head tilts again and again.

Prompt responsiveness is fair. Especially if you are animating an image that you already generated. The generator does a good job of keeping the face, the lighting, the style and animating it, which means there’s a certain continuity from the still image to the video.

All in all, the tool is fun to use to animate a character in short loops, but it is not a video creator. It’s more of an animated portrait creator than a scene-based video generator. For short immersive loops, it’s great, but the motion and variety aren’t really there for it to be fully cinematic.

Character Diversity

Due to the nature of Promptchan’s system, the diversity of characters isn’t so much about the number of ‘stock’ characters available (though there are many examples to browse through in the library and examples section of the site) but about the types of characters and scenarios you can create. Overall, there’s a pretty good mix of different ‘types’ of characters you can find, from professional girlfriend types and shy, introverted types, to ‘geeky’ or ‘kinky’ characters and everything in between. A great deal of variation can be found in the visual style of the characters as well, from photorealistic models and anime-style waifus, to cartoon and comic-style characters and even furries and fantasy creatures. Given that many (most) of the characters are uploaded by users, the general variety comes across as pretty broad, though as you might expect there does seem to be an emphasis on creating adult partners, so while you may find a lot of variation in the appearance and style of characters, a lot of them do tend to skew toward similar content and themes.

Character Creation

Character creation is very much handled with a prompt first mentality and as such you do not have a form with 20+ fields to fill in when setting up your character. The two options you have are to upload an image for the character or generate one. But really the actual building of the character is going to be done with the settings and the prompt. Here you have a few settings that allow you to adjust things like the personality and tone of the AI in chat, for instance you can set the character to be shy, teasing, dominant, playful etc. as well as making it sound more formal or casual. The prompt also allows you to define the backstory and scenario you want the character to be in.

This method lends itself well to the user that is comfortable writing prompts and describing exactly what they want. For others that want to have a little more hand holding this may not be ideal as all of your personality and backstory sections are going to be handled in this prompt section.

User Interface

The Promptchan website interface is a little basic and not super user-friendly, but we’ll cover that now. The homepage has the prompt and generate page, as well as galleries and settings on a basic top bar, so it’s not super hard to get going on generating images, but it does take a little getting used to with the amount of buttons and options on the same page. Still, it’s mostly serviceable.

Pricing

Promptchan operates on a credit system, with a virtual currency called “Gems”. Although it has a free version, the effective use of the platform largely relies on the number of Gems at your disposal. The free version provides a daily credit of approximately 30 Gems, with each generation consuming around 1 Gem (depending on the image type). This means that the free version is viable if you want to casually play around every now and then, but you are limited by your daily credit. Once you’ve depleted your daily credit, you must either wait for the next day for your credit to be replenished, or upgrade to a paid plan.

The paid version has three plans, Plus (approximately 11.99USD/month, 100 Gems per month, faster generation, and access to some generation features), Premium (approximately 400 Gems per month, faster generation, and access to more generation features and styles), and Pro (approximately 26.99USD per month, highest number of Gems per month, fastest generation, access to all features, and access to video generation).

It is worth noting that a paid subscription does not bypass the credit system, as you will still need to consume your Gems to generate images, and certain generation features, higher quality, or modes will cost more Gems per image.

You can also purchase packs of Gems separately if you want more than your monthly allocation. This means that the platform has a hybrid monetization model, where the user pays for a monthly subscription, but may also need to pay for more credits depending on how much they use the platform. In reality, the credit system is the primary driver of the cost, as power users can easily deplete their monthly allocation if they are generating lots of images, especially if they are playing around with different prompts, higher quality, or multiple generations. This means that the platform’s pricing model feels less like a flat monthly subscription, and more like a monthly subscription tacked on to a pay per use credit system.

Privacy, Safety, and Moderation

While not radically different, the privacy and safety features of Promptchan are a bit less clear-cut than the average mainstream AI model. The website indicates that users are generally in control of their own privacy, with image generations usually set to private, and the ability to make any given image private, unlisted, or public. It also states that neither prompts nor generated images are used in model training unless you want them to be, and that only minimal account information is stored.

The moderation is centered more around legality and general consent, rather than heavy restrictions. As Promptchan welcomes NSFW image generation, there are significantly fewer content restrictions than usual, but you’re still expected to refrain from making anything that’s illegal or non-consensual.

Ultimately, the general safety and privacy on Promptchan feel pretty par for the course with an NSFW AI generator: the privacy options are very apparent and easy to manage, but the content moderation and reporting tools are not as immediately apparent, and there is more onus on the user to keep themselves safe and follow the rules.

The biggest strength of the platform is in the control it gives users. If you like playing with prompts, styles, and character attributes, you may find Promtchan quite enjoyable.

However, the gem-based economy does mean that over time, power users will feel the squeeze. The free version offers enough gems per day to get a feel for the product and its capabilities, but frequent use (particularly if you want to generate images or videos) will eat into those gems.
